Project Title: Improving S-House

Module:

Tropical Architecture & Sustainability

The module helps to educate students on examples of sustainably design throughout Asia.

Project Brief:

We had to improve on a house in Mekong Delta that had green features. We had to do an in depth research of all the multiple types of houses already existing in Mekong and integrate what we had learnt to come up with alternative or adaptive features to change, remove or add on to the S-House.

Learning Experience/Reflection:

I learnt that we had to have a deep understanding before jumping in to the implementation/proposal process. We had to be meticulous about every idea we suggested and kept asking ourselves "So?" to see if we could further justify our suggestion. It was incredibly tedious and it had led to a few conflict between me and my group. We were stumped at first, reaching dead ends. This wasn't until we were assigned make a board to show what we researched about Mekong Delta. My group and I had a lot of fun making our board 3D to properly show what we had researched on.

Along with that, we were assigned to do a presentation about the National Gallery here in Singapore. We went in with and open mind, camera on one hand and ready to learn. It really made us observe about the smallest of details like shading, ventilation, basically things that would go unnoticed during our everyday lives but pertinent.

After spending a whole day at our assigned location, it helped us get a clearer view of what we believed was important to implement to our S-House. We had more solid ideas coming in, especially for my part which was Climatic Adaptations. Before visiting the gallery, I already had a list to look out for relating to my part. With what I was seeing right in front of me and the topics that were taught such as how Architecture has evolved over the years, it was a different experience altogether. With that, I amassed a greater appreciation, hunger and understanding for sustainable designs in Architecture. If I was faced with a similar situation

in the future, I would definitely be more confident as this project has allowed me to go out of my bubble and grow as a person. It was a really enlightening and useful experience and thankful that my group and I managed to work together and and help each other along the way.
