Managing Single-Use Plastic Waste (PComm)

Project / Module Experience

I had to choose a problem that is within my community, which was single-use plastic waste. I had to do a survey of some residents on what they felt about being given cash incentives for bringing their own bags instead of using plastic bags at grocery stores. I also came up with the conclusion for the local community network to recycle the plastic and create new tote bags that will be distributed to residents for them to use when grocery shopping.

Learning Experience

My ideas developed when our tutor told us to observe our surroundings and that was when I noticed a family carrying lots of fair price plastic bags on the way home. They did not purchase the already available tote bags. I learned that people love a cash incentive hence, my proposal was to provide discounts if they brought their own tote bags and to price people who still opt to use single-use plastic bags.
